Tikanga Wakari Performance at a Local Matariki Celebration

The Tuakana team (the Middle & Senior syndicate group) were invited to perform at the Flagstaff Community Church Matariki Celebration last weekend.  The children did a wonderful job, singing three songs that we have been practising during our Kapa Haka sessions.  Have a look at the clip below if you would like to see them in action!

E I A I E (Ngā iwi e...)

Both our Kapa Haka groups have been learning E I A I E (Ngā iwi e).  This is a beautiful song which is all about coming together as one.  Click on the link below to access a sound clip of this song, and the lyrics follow below so you will be able to sing along!

Nga iwi e, nga iwi e
Kia kotahi ra
Te Moana-Nui-a-Kiwa
(x2)
E-i-a-i-e!
(Whakarongo Tautoko)
E-i-a-i-e!                                                                                           (Whakarongo Tautoko)
Kia mau ra, kia mau ra
Ki te mana motuhake
Me te aroha
(x2)
E-i-a-i-e!

E-i-a-i-e!

Tihore Mai

The Tuakana group (the Middles and Seniors) have been learning a beautiful song called Tihore Mai.

The sound link is below (along with the words) for you to practise at home!

Tīhore mai te rangi
tīhore mai
mao mao mao te ua
whiti mai te rā,
mao mao mao te ua
whiti mai te rā,
E rere te kōtare
ki runga pūwharawhara
ruru parirau
kei mate i te ua,
ruru parirau
kei mate i te ua.
Tīhore mai te rangi . . .e rere e noke
mai i tō pokorua
kai ki i te wai
kai mate i te ua,
kai ki i te wai
kai mate i te ua,
Tīhore mai te rangi
tīhore mai
mao mao mao te ua
whiti mai te rā,
mao mao mao te ua
whiti mai te rā,

e . . . i . . . e . . .
whiti mai te rā

e . . . i . . . e . . .
whiti mai te rā.

Clear up Sky
clear up
stop stop stop Rain
come out Sun
stop stop stop Rain
come out Sun.
Fly Kingfisher
up onto the clump of astelia.
Ruffle the rain-drops from your wings
in case you catch a chill.
Ruffle the rain-drops from your wings
in case you catch a chill.Clear up Sky . . .Escape Earthworm
out of your burrow
in case it fills with water
and you drown.
in case it fills with water
and you drown.Clear up Sky
clear up
stop stop stop Rain
come out Sun
stop stop stop Rain
come out Sun.

e . . . i . . . e . . .
Let the Sun shine

e . . . i . . . e . . .
Let the Sun shine

The Teina Team Practise E I A I E...

The Junior Kapa Haka team (Teina Team) worked hard to get their mouths around some new words today in our song "E I A I E, Ngā Iwi E".  This is a beautiful (and catchy!) song about people uniting together.  The full lyrics to the song follow after the clip.

I wonder if any Teina Team members can spot themselves in this video?
